Web Design
I have been playing around with websites since 1999 when I first started writing software reviews for the Good Software Guide website. Although I didn't catch the HTML bug untill I became the British History editor at About.com in 2000. As most web designers probably know though, once you catch the bug there is no cure and I have been a fully paid up web geek ever since!
I haven't always been able to devote as much time as I would like to designing web sites, but like a sponge I am constantly trying to soak up new knowledge, new ideas and techniques. I have so many web design books I could probably open a library, and I doubt there is an online web tutorial I haven't at least looked at - I told you I was a geek!
Like most of us that didn't know better at the time, I started out designing websites in table based layouts with a liberal use of those now frowned upon HTML styling tags and just a smidiging of CSS for good measure. Increasingly though I have tried to become a reformed charecter learning about the importance of accessibility and usability and I am trying to embrace the web standards movement and embrace the seperation of structure, style and behaviour - the great triumvirate of modern web design! Now my sites are structured using XHTML and styled purely with CSS. I have been amazed at the freedom you get designing in this way and how much easier sites are to manage and update - I am suprised everyone isn't doing it!
